The United Nations & Sustainable Development Goals
The United Nations aspires to attain sustainable, inclusive, and just societies. The conjecture of the varied Nations and their problems apropos of having dynamism in terms of beliefs and systems posed an encumbrance in enabling absolute development. Apprehending the severity of the concern, the United Nations has eventuated the possible elucidation and has concocted Sustainable Development Goals with the aim of extricating any country from practices leading to any potential hurdle in the path of development. These goals aim to bring a mainstreamed model in terms of intervening with identified issues with an attempt to revamp and ameliorate the existing laws that lead to further predicaments. The United Nations’ primary stance is to ensure egalitarianism, thereby enabling equality and equity among all.
Through the primary interventions and actions that are reviewed, the United Nations has recommended effective frameworks and machineries for implementation, thereby making necessary amendments in the laws, provisions and clauses. The effective intervention of academic institutions as a strong machinery has enabled the organisation to come up with a possible solution to enhance opportunities among people. The interventions of various Academic Hubs have equipped the people with knowledge and awareness regarding identified issues, which are a part of the seventeen SDGs. Establishment of strong dialogues with the stakeholders has not only led to empowerment of the initiatives taken by the academic hubs but has also resulted in building effective mechanisms for the United Nations to achieve its agendas. The staunch equilibrium of the country’s overall circumstances has been further strengthened by enabling such academic hubs to have more effective interventions.
United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI)
United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) is an initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in supporting and contributing to the realisation of United Nations goals and mandates, including the promotion and protection of human rights, access to education, sustainability and conflict resolution.
Since 2010, UNAI has created a vibrant and diverse network of students, academics, scientists, researchers, think tanks, institutions of higher education, and educational partners. There are over 1400 member institutions in more than 145 countries that reach nearly 25 million people in the education and research sectors around the world. The work of these institutions is vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals as they serve as incubators of new ideas, inventions and solutions to the many global challenges we face. United Nations Academic Impact provides the integral link between the UN and these stakeholders to ensure that the international community harnesses the energy and innovation of young people and the research community in service to humanity.
Every subject and discipline can have a UN imprint. We want relevant institutions to recognise this link and undertake activities that can directly support United Nations mandates and objectives.
UNAI assists stakeholders in this regard by disseminating information on UN initiatives and activities, providing ideas on how these activities can be applied at the local level on college campuses, in classrooms and in communities, and by providing a platform where university students, academics and researchers can connect and share ideas, research and resources to further the Sustainable Development Goals and other UN mandates.
More details, including the ten underlying principles of UNAI, the list of current members and how to join, can be found at academicimpact.un.org. There is no cost or fee for a university to join UNAI. The sole responsibility is for each member institution to actively demonstrate support of at least one of these principles each year. It is our hope that this support can find reflection in the United Nations’ own policies and programmes, allowing for a sharing of experiences and effective practices as well as the infusion of scholarship to the realisation of social, economic and political objectives.
